Surgical Nursing

A surgical nurse is a nursing professional that is trained to be able to assist during both routine and difficult surgical procedures. These types of nurses can be found around operating tables all across the word, assisting surgeons with both elective and life-saving procedures.

If surgeons are considered leaders of a surgical team, surgical nurses can be thought of as the backbones of these teams. They are there from the very beginning of the procedure to the very end. In fact, without surgical nurses, it would be almost impossible for surgeons to do their jobs well. These specialty nurses assist with all sorts of tasks before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Besides assisting with just general surgical procedures, most surgical nurses choose to specialize in one area. This can be an area such as obstetrics, pediatric surgery, or cardiac surgery, among others.

The Importance of Comfortable Shoes

It is crucial that if you plan on becoming a nurse that you have a good pair of shoes to go with the challenge. There are a variety of different types of shoes that are suited for people who spend long hours on their feet. Here are a couple of good options for nurses.

Telemetry Potential

Nursing school can definitely be a challenge especially if you are not sure of what to expect. It is important to make sure you are full prepared for this challenge. Often potential nursing school students ask, is nursing school harder than being a nurse? In many cases, yes it is. But it can help prepare you for what is to come in your nursing career. Learn more about the challenges faced in nursing school as well as how to become a telemetry nurse.

Telemetry Nurse

In the telemetry unit of a hospital, patients are often in critical condition and need constant monitoring and care. Telemetry nurses review data from special equipment to track a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and other vitals. They also carry out more traditional nursing duties such as administering medications and communicating with patients regarding their condition.

Since most of the patients in a telemetry unit have suffered heart attacks or are recovering from cardiac surgery, some RNs specialize in cardiac telemetry and are proficient in the use of electrocardiogram equipment. However, telemetry units may also be used to monitor patients with sleep disorders or neurological issues, such as epilepsy.

Since constant monitoring is required for patients within a telemetry unit, hospitals need to have telemetry RNs on duty 24/7. These nurses often work long shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Education Required

Telemetry nurses work with sophisticated equipment, so they must be proficient in using technology and interpreting data. They also need extensive medical knowledge and a familiarity with their patients’ medical history, so that they can ensure that patients are receiving the correct care and answer any questions patients may have. Telemetry unit RNs are typically responsible for multiple patients at a time, so strong multi-tasking abilities are a helpful trait.

RNs working in a telemetry unit should be sensitive to the needs of patients and their families, and ready to ease their concerns. Telemetry nurses need to be able to communicate with patients regarding their condition, and therefore should have good interpersonal skills. They may also be responsible for educating patients and their families on healthy diet and exercise, disease prevention and lifestyle changes that are needed once a patient leaves the hospital.

Even though nursing school can be a real challenge, the skills that you learn there can never be un-learned. You are now able to work in a telemetry unit in a hospital and be a trusted member of the team.

Nursing school and working as a nurse can be equally as difficult as one another but are also equally as important. Make sure you prepare yourself for the challenges that lie ahead in your future career as a telemetry nurse.

  • In the operating room, registered nurses (RNs) or advanced practice nurses assist the surgical team and coordinate all room activities

The opportunities for a career in surgical nursing are diverse and rewarding. Surgical nurses specialize in any or all aspects of surgery, and many work in sub-specialties such as cardiac surgery, intensive care, or pediatric surgery. Doctors rely on these dedicated professionals who touch countless lives and bring about positive improvements in the health and welfare of patients and their families.

Becoming a surgical nurse requires completion of a twelve-month diploma or certificate program, available at some community colleges, vocational high schools, and health career academies. The surgical nurse curriculum includes essential topics such as anatomy and physiology, as well as skills practice and training in real-world clinical settings under an instructor’s supervision

Becoming a licensed practical nurse is not as hard as it sounds. Licensed practical nurses or licensed vocational nurses are nursing professionals who work under the direct supervision of doctors and registered nurses or RNs. While they do not have the training or credentials that are required to administer anesthesia or perform surgery, LPNs are invaluable members of any healthcare team. Their duties vary considerably and depend on the needs of doctors, registered nurses and patients.

For an LPN, no two days are ever alike. In fact, it is common for an LPN to perform a variety of tasks during the course of a single shift. LPNs float move from place to place, providing support where it is needed. The majority of the typical LPN’s day involves providing direct care to patients, which takes many different forms.

Forensics: Digging for the Truth

There are a variety of different types of nursing fields that you could choose to work in. It can be very overwhelming at first, but if you have two different passions you would like to combine then it can actually be quite simple. Depending on how much time you have to spend in school, you may want to start out as an LPN. Or you may want to go as far as to become a forensic nurse. Regardless, they are equally important and have lots of opportunities available.

Forensic Nursing

With the growing use of technology in crime solving, forensic nurses have to know how to properly collect evidence so it can be examined and used in court. Being an expert witness for the court is just part of the duties of forensic nurses. Caregivers with an interest in detective work and the law could investigate a career in forensic nursing. Forensic means pertaining to the law.

Forensic nurses provide health care to patients who are likely to enter the court system. Victims of assault, abuse and neglect quickly learn about forensic nurses. Forensic nurses may also have suspected criminals and prisoners as patients. These highly trained registered nurses (RNs) usually have experience in emergency room nursing. They ensure that evidence is collected properly and can be used in court. Like all RNs, they must teach patients about medical conditions and give advice and emotional support.

Nurse Practitioners

Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurse (LPN or LVN) jobs are actually the same role despite the slight difference in name. The LVN title is only used in Texas and California. The job involves a variety of daily tasks ranging from dressing wounds to feeding infants. Most LPNs are trained to work in all aspects of health care, but there are some who specialize in certain areas.

LPNs/LVNs can be found in all kinds of medical settings, like hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, nursing homes and even in a patient’s own home. While the general LPN role doesn’t change, there can be variations in your duties depending on where you work. For example, LPNs/LVNs in a physician’s office may do some administrative tasks like making appointments, whereas an LPN in a hospital may find themselves with more advanced nursing responsibilities in an emergency room.

Telemetry Nursing

Telemetry nurses help provide bedside care to patients who are in serious, and sometimes critical, condition and who require constant electronic monitoring. A telemetry nurse is trained in the use of machines that monitor a patient’s heart rate, breathing and other vital signs. While at least one nurse is constantly monitoring the telemetry screens, RNs who work in telemetry units are also expected to carry out traditional bedside care duties, including assisting patients with medications and daily nutrition.

A patient is admitted to a telemetry unit when a doctor feels that they require intensive cardiac monitoring, which can occur after a heart attack or serious surgical procedure. Telemetry nurses are trained to monitor any subtle changes in a patient’s vital signs. It’s important that a telemetry nurse has control of their emotions and can remain cool, calm and collected when responding to emergency situations. RNs in this field should be able to remain focused during stressful procedures and medical situations that require quick thinking.

A telemetry nurse makes anywhere from $65,000-$80,000 depending on the place in which they work as well as their formal training.

Average People, Heroic Lives

Everybody needs a little bit of motivation and inspiration in our lives. Sometimes life simply doesn’t go the way we had planned. It is good to stay positive and move forward with our lives when things don’t go our way. Whether you need some daily inspiration because you have had a lousy day or you need a little extra motivation to get you up and moving to finish your daily workout, there is a little bit of something for everyone if you continue to read on. You are not alone, so hopefully these positive and inspirational life quotes will get you on the right track.

There are many times in our lives where nothing seems to be going right. Whether you didn’t get the promotion you were looking for or maybe you lost your job all together. It is important to remember that for as many times we fail, we succeed just the same.

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” –Michael Jordan

Even people as successful as Michael Jordan understand that it is not always easy to fail. But he also realizes that in order to succeed we have to fail. We would never learn from our mistakes and strive for more in our lives if we didn’t fail at some point. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Accept your failures as part of the process and move on with your life.

Sometimes these failures causes us to have zero motivation to do anything else. Many times we lose the motivation to work out and do other things we typically enjoy. If you feel like you are in a slump, it’s going to be okay! Just ease yourself back into your routine with just a quick 5 minute workout. It may not sound like a lot, but you are building yourself up for a way bigger workout. Pace yourself while also rewarding yourself for your achievements. Positive reinforcement always pays off.

Nobody is perfect, we all need a boost sometimes. It isn’t always easy to get up out of bed to go to work in the morning or go out for our morning run. There are going to be times where you need a certain amount of inspiration and motivation to keep you on your toes. Don’t give up on the task at hand, just take a deep breath and charge through. And if you need some inspiration there is always motivation right at the tip of your fingers.

Can Vacuum Sealing Be Hazardous To Your Health?

People are always trying to make their lives easier by inventing new appliances. Many of them are considered to be revolutionary as they make doing chores much easier and faster. Now it is almost impossible to imagine our life without a dishwashing machine, a pressure cooker, a blender and many other home appliances. A vacuum sealer is on this list as well, helping people to store foods for longer periods of time and claiming that by removing oxygen foods are preserved from mold and fungi.

However, there are certain types of bacteria that prefer low oxygen environment and they can grow even on vacuum sealed foods. Botulism and Listeria monocytogenes are examples that can grow and thrive in an anaerobic environment causing food borne illnesses. They can also grow even faster in vacuum sealed food because there is no competition with other bacteria. If the foods were not packaged under vacuum the oxygen will protect food from C. botulinum growth and development, but since there’s almost no air nothing prevents these types of bacteria from thriving. Under refrigerated conditions extended shelf life could allow slow growing bacteria to reach high numbers. These types of bacteria do not produce noticeable changes in food as opposed to spoilage bacteria that normally spoils the food in a noticeable way (odor, color, sliminess, etc.).

If you prepare your food in a clean uncontaminated environment, there is nothing to worry about, but if you want to make sure that your food is safe after vacuum sealing follow the following guidelines:

• Wash your hands before and during the vacuum sealing process.

• It’s better not to touch food with your hands at all. Use clean sanitized spoons, tongs or other kitchen utensils to handle the food.

• Keep utensils, cutting boards and working surfaces clean and sanitized.

• Store vacuum sealed foods in the refrigerator or freezer. Dry products, such as pasta or rice can be kept at room temperature.

• Keep the package with thawing food open to minimize bacterial growth. If the package stays closed there is still a vacuum environment where pathogenic bacteria can be active.

• Make sure you don’t cross contaminate food.

• Label the sealed packages with type of food and date packaged.

• Always make sure that the seal is complete and no air will be coming into the bag.

• Don’t throw away the manual: it has important information concerning shelf life of vacuum packaged foods. Always keep that in mind and check your freezer periodically to make sure there is nothing too old.

• Any food showing signs of spoilage should be discarded immediately.

Vacuum sealing foods is an effective way to store your foods fresh and prolong their shelf life, but remember that removing air from the package doesn’t just solve some food storage problems – it could also bring others. Just make sure you are taking proper steps in handling and storing your food to reduce bacteria.

When Dogs Go Green

Even though dogs are primarily meat eaters, they do require a few vitamins and minerals that can only be obtained from the plant kingdom. But like us, a lot more plants are foe than friends. Make sure you monitor the vegetables that your dog eats, or else both you and your dog will suffer the consequences.

In truth, there are the hundreds of plants that are toxic to dogs. It may be difficult to remember all this foliage, but the truth is that we don’t use most of these at home. So to make things easier, here is a list of vegetables and fruits that frequent the cutting board, but shouldn’t be gobbled up by your precious pooch.

Grapes and Raisins

Even a handful of raisins are toxic to your dog. Symptoms that develop later include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. Taking larger quantities can cause liver damage or kidney failure.

Not all mushrooms are toxic to dogs, but not giving them any is the safest bet. The most toxic mushroom to dogs is Amanita phalloides. Symptoms developed include abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma and eventually death.

Onions and Garlic

These may be our favorite flavor enhancers, but not for the dog. Thiosulphate is the main culprit here. It’s found more in onions than in garlic. The compound causes a condition called hemolytic anemia where the dog’s blood cells burst during circulation, leading to death a few days afterwards.

Pits, Stems and Leaves

The above mentioned parts of fruits like Apple, Apricot, Almond, Peach, Wild Cherries,  Balsam Pear, Plum, Prunes and similar fruit contain cyanide and are toxic to dogs as well as humans. It can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and death.

They are mildly toxic to dogs due to a toxin called persin. The large seed can also choke the dog or cause blocked intestines in small dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and lack of stool production. Avocados are deadly for most other animals.

These are just a few fruits and vegetables that aren’t meant for your dog. Other common plant products to look out for include broccoli, cherries, nutmeg, daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, marijuana, morning glory, aloe vera, castor beans, tobacco, macadamia nuts, pointsettia and lantana.

Can My Dog Eat Dairy Products?

As long as your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, almost all dairy products that do not have any added flavoring or preservatives can be given to your dog. Dogs love dairy products like cheese and yogurt and will happily lick tidbits off your fingers. Another added benefit of yogurt is that it increases the good bacteria in your dog’s intestines, as well as your own. It’s a tasty snack that both of you can enjoy on a stroll with no cares. The calcium in the yogurt helps in build strong bones and beautiful pearly whites. In case your dog is recovering from a bacterial infection, yogurt can help recolonize the good bacteria that have died from the medication. Make sure your vet gives the green signal first. And remember, a little of something goes a long way.

Huge Canines And Big Spiders

If you love the idea of adding a giant canine companion to your household, you must consider the top giant dog breeds in the world. Technically, the biggest breed is the Great Dane, with an average height of 28-34 inches although the tallest dog in the world reached a whopping 44 inches! Known popularly as gentle giants, these sociable and sensitive animals thrive in indoor living situations with loving families. In spite of their friendly nature, Great Danes also make effective guard dogs with the right training. The heaviest dog, meanwhile, is the English Mastiff, averaging between 120 to 220 pounds. Good natured and strong, this breed does best in spacious households with big yards or gardens since it requires a lot of exercise to stay fit. The English Mastiff may require specific training in its early years to ensure that it develops a stable and calm personality.

Of course, any breed is better able to behave in the desired manner with the appropriate training. Early socialization is also crucial for dogs if they are expected to interact with children and visitors. The Great Pyrenees, for example, is generally gentle and affectionate towards kids but it can be stubborn. Therefore, to avoid problems, it should be trained at the right time. Another popular giant dog is the Irish Wolfhound, a noble-looking creature. With consistent guidance and love, this patient and dignified dog makes an excellent addition to the family unit.  If your idea of a good time involves long walks and hikes, then the Irish Wolfhound is the perfect companion. Other large breeds include the St Bernard, Leonberger, and Anatolian Shepherd Dog.

While a balanced diet and exercise are crucial, you must also protect your dog from poisons. There were more than 100,000 cases of pets being poisoned in the past year, so this is far more common than many dog owners realize. Depending on how your particular dog reacts, many toxins can even prove fatal. The worst poisons for canines include insecticides, rodenticides, prescription/over-the-counter medication for people, and household products like paint thinner or cleaning supplies. Make sure to put these well out of reach to avoid a tragic accident. Many food items that are absolutely fine for humans may also kill your canine companion, such as grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, and xylitol (commonly found in sugar-free products).

Apart from these poisons, a spider bite can also cause dogs a great deal of pain, suffering or even death. While the venom of many spiders is harmless in the case of dogs, this is not the case for all species. The bite of a black widow spider, which is found in nearly every state in the US, may lead to muscle tremors, rigidity, severe pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Its venom can be fatal for dogs if anti-venom medication is not administered in time. The brown recluse spider is another dangerous specimen for canines. Its bite creates an open wound, risking infection, and has occasionally been known to cause renal failure. If you think your dog has bitten by a spider and it is showing signs like inflammation, abnormal lesions, fever, spasms, and joint pain, visit the vet at the earliest. Some of the biggest spiders in the world are also potential human killers, while others are relatively harmless. The largest is names the Goliath bird-eating tarantula; its bite can cause severe pain and nausea but is not fatal for human beings. On the other hand, the Brazilian wandering spider, which likes to hang out on bananas, is one of the most venomous specimens in the world. Its bite can kill a human being within mere minutes if an antidote is not administered.

Are you fascinated by fish and excited by the prospect of observing them as they go about their day? If so, you should certainly consider a trip to a few of the biggest and best aquariums in the world. Approximately 1.5 million visitors make their way to the National Aquarium in Baltimore each year, drawn by the 660 species that can be found swimming around in one million gallons of water! The rainforest terrarium on the roof is an added attraction. One of the newer entrants in the group in the Trukuazoo aquarium, built in Turkey in 2009. It can be found in the Forum Istanbul Shopping Mall and has a number of amazing features, including an 80-metre underwater walk-through tunnel and a number of habitats such as flooded forest and rainforest. It houses about 10,000 marine species. The largest tank in Europe can be found at L’Oceanografic in Valencia, Spain – it contains 1.85 million gallons of water. The aquarium has 45,000 species in residence. Africa’s largest tank, meanwhile, lies in uShaka Marine World in Durban, South Africa; the sea-wreck themed aquairum 32 tanks contain just short of a million gallons of water. It also houses a famous restaurant with a wall aquarium which allows you to shark-watch as you eat a meal!

Another massive marine exhibit is Georgia Aquarium, which has a 6.3 million gallon tank. It was formerly the largest in the world but in 2014, that title was taken by Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai city, China. With a total water volume of 12.87 gallons along with largest viewing dome, aquarium window, and acrylic panel, this aquarium is a must see for anyone who believes bigger is better! The island park houses various themed areas. The first phase of building the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom was approximately RMB 10 billion.

While domestic aquariums are an amazing opportunity for people to experience the wonders of aquatic life on a daily basis, there are concerns about whether these marine exhibits are eco-friendly. There are various types of aquariums that are perfectly suited to those who want to live an environmentally responsible manner. Instead of the conventional glass tanks, you can choose the river plant aquarium instead – a concept that blends aquarium with garden and utilizes the symbiosis between plants and fish. An innovative fish-tank and planter hybrid also harnesses this relationship. The excretion of the fish acts as nutrition for the small plants, which eliminates the need to clean the tank very often. Another option is a floating garden, which is essentially a fish tank with a tiny garden attached above. The greenery adds a breath of fresh air and soothes the fish as well. Those who believe in locally growing and eating their own food may consider a refrigerator aquarium, wherein your can grow plants and breed fish for consumption at the same time.

Those who believe in environmental sustainability may want to extend this philosophy to travel as well. AirBnB is a great option for those who want to take more eco-friendly holidays by staying a “green” apartment at their destination. Those heading to western Australia, for example, can look at the delightful Daisy House which has been built using recycled materials. Travelers to Jordan, Italy, and Croatia have the option to opt for beautifully done up, eco-friendly apartments. Portland, one of the most progressive cities in the US, offers a number of great apartment rental choices for the green traveler.

At Home In The Arctic

Even places that seem brutally inhospitable to mankind are the perfect homes for certain members of the animal kingdom. The tundra across the northern part our world is a good example. Treeless and freezing, the Arctic region is the preferred adobe of a variety of creatures that are equipped to live there. Perhaps the most famous of these is the polar bear, the dominant land animal in the region. Blessed with a layer of blubber and an insulating fur, the body of the polar bear is geared to handle the low Arctic temperatures. The coat of the polar bear (which appears like that of a soft toy in popular representations) is oily in real life, which helps to keep moisture away even when the animal is in water. Tundra and Arctic wolves, too, have a fur coat and thick undercoat to battle the sub-zero winds. The Arctic hares, on the other hand, employ a different strategy. They huddle closely in groups to derive warmth and stay safe. The massive musk ox also believes in the value of staying warm and secure in groups. These distinctive animals protect their young by keeping them in the center, with the adults stationed around them in a circle.

Other creatures that can be found in the Arctic include the baby harp seal, Arctic fox, lemming, and snowy owl. Many animals are fortunate enough to have nature’s most marvelous way of dealing with the worst of the winter: hibernation. Hibernation is essentially a state of suspended animation (sometimes called deep sleep), in which the creature’s body processes, such as the heart rate and breathing, slow down. The body temperature also dips. Together, these developments allow for greater conservation of energy and protection against the chill. While the word “sleep” is often used to describe hibernation, the two states are actually vastly different. Hibernation is far more intense; in fact, many animals emerge from it feeling exhausted.

This smart process also means that many animals do not have to try and find food at the height of winter; instead, they eat more than usual at the beginning of the cold spell and then settle down for the long sleep. Of course, not all hibernation lasts for weeks or months on end. Some animals go into lighter hibernation for shorter spans, sometimes only a few hours in the day. This state is called torpor and is common among smaller animals. Deer mice, for instance, torpor from the morning to late afternoon and search for food in the evenings. Skunks torpor for a few months along with their close family members; during this period, they may occasionally wake up and eat something. Hamsters also go into torpor for a few days or weeks. Pet owners should remember this so as not to panic and wake up the hamster with a start (which can literally cause the creature to have a heart attack).

The common poorwill is the only bird that goes into deep hibernation, for up to 100 days, during which period its daily energy requirement declines by a whopping 93 percent. Alpine marmots are also true hibernators. In fact, they spend only four months awake, with the other eight months spent in suspended animation. In that state their heart only beats 3-4 times a minute. Other hibernating animals include bats, bears, prairie dogs, and hedgehogs. Among the many wonders of the natural world, hibernation is one of the most astounding – an intelligent and effective way for creatures to survive harsh winters in the wild.

Curriculum And Character

A casual question that is sometimes asked of another individual is how their work is going? Sometimes, the individual will reply that it is a great job if they didn’t have to work with people. This tongue in cheek response has a ring of truth to it in that often, what makes a job difficult, is dealing with different personalities of fellow employees or managers.

Consequently, if an individual finds that they do not necessarily enjoy working well with others, an employment opportunity that might be of interest to them would be working with numbers. Specifically, the individual may wish to explore a career in the accounting world. And even more specifically, the basic entry job into accounting would be as a bookkeeper.

Therefore, if interested in this type of position, it would be important for the individual to know what is required educationally and the type of personality that is needed.

First of all, to be a bookkeeper, requires no formal education or degree. However, it is important for the considering individual to understand that training is required. Generally, a bookkeeper will have earned some sort of certification in bookkeeping or received their Associate of Arts degree in this particular line of study. A certificate is generally earned when an individual has gone through a one year’s course of study which includes mathematics pertinent to the business world, learning about various accounting software packages, studying the basic principles of accounting and an overview of payroll as well as accounts receivable and accounts payable.

That training needed would be a basic understanding of accounting in both macro and micro accounting. Therefore, the individual would certainly benefit from accounting classes. Generally this type of training can be accomplished through online courses or by attending their local junior college.

Additionally, every line of successful business has to have in place some sort of process for accounting. This is true for both small and large businesses and the number of staff involved with accounting is in direct proportion to the budget and business volume of the particular company. Consequently, an opportunity that might present itself to the aspiring bookkeeper would be to start in the accounting department as perhaps an accounting clerk or data entry position within the accounting department. This would provide a great opportunity to get a “feel” of the accounting world and actually gain some experience.

The second consideration, if thinking about this line of work, is to understand the personality of a bookkeeper. Some of those personal traits of the potential bookkeeper should include honesty, attention to detail, the desire to work with numbers, the commitment to following policies and procedures, etc.Additional value character and personality traits are identified at http://www.abn.org.au/blog/bookkeeper-traits-skill-set/.

Consequently, a personality that is rather no nonsense and by the book is valuable because being in this position requires that the bookkeeper follow the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles which do not allow for anyone’s personal or misinterpretation of the standards of accounting.

Finally, the added value of starting as a bookkeeper in the accounting world is the springboard opportunity that might be provided. This opportunity would allow for the individual to learn more about bookkeeping and accounting and then if there is continued interest in this financial career field they may wish to move into the degree position of being an accountant.

What is The Right Age For Kids To Drink Coffee?

For one reason or another coffee has always been regarded as a beverage for adults. But given the youthful and trendy way coffee is being advertised and marketed today, an inevitable question crops up – should kids enjoy it, too?

You’re shopping at your favorite supermarket and you decide to have an espresso at the café area. Your 14 year old boy says “Mom, can I have one too?”

What do you say? How do you respond? Your natural instinct starts going nuts. Will the caffeine make him over-active? Will it stunt his growth? What will the other moms say if they see me giving my young, short-haired son a cup of espresso. What, in the first place, is the right age for anybody to take coffee?

Coffee Today

Nowadays, coffee comes in an overwhelming multitude of varieties, flavors and concoctions, many of them with strong appetite appeal, attracting the attention and interest of our kids. As if to confirm this, the National Coffee Association of America says it’s the young folks who comprise the fastest-growing age segment of coffee buffs (Source: Reuters).

There seems to be no running away from it.These yummy-looking, delectable coffee drinks are all around us. Coffee shops are popping up in supermarkets, libraries and book stores apart from those fashionable coffee chains that you’ll find in most urban areas. Many fast food outlets and the donut chains have all gotten into the trend as well, offering innovative coffee-based drinks. These are topped with whipped cream and swirled with honey or chocolate syrup making them look more like milkshakes rather than coffee.

Naturally, they stir up the appetites of teenagers and young kids. When TV ads appear with the message that everybody needs a boost to go through our busy day and that coffee’s got the right jolt, it’s could easy to fall into the trap.

But is it ok for a high-school student to take coffee to perk up his day and stay up for the final exams? Is it ok for these kids to have mocha latte’s so they’d look sophisticated among friends without causing any health concerns?

Is Coffee Really Harmful To Kids?

We know coffee doesn’t hinder children’s natural growth. Too much caffeine, though, can lead to symptoms of hyperactivity, anxiety, insomnia and sometimes irregular heartbeat.

So When Is Too Much Too Much?

For adults the mayo clinic says it shouldn’t be more than 200-300 milligrams (about 2-3 average-sized cups) of coffee per day. The us has no official figures regarding daily amounts for kids. Health Canada though suggests that teen-agers with 110 pound weight shouldn’t take in more than 125 milligrams of caffeine a day. The equation is 2.5 milligrams of caffeine per day per kilogram of body weight. The younger ones, 10-12 years old should take no more than 85 milligrams per day. As a reference, one should know that coffee beverages generally contain about 150 milligrams of caffeine. ( Source : Mayo Clinic)

What To Do

So what do you do about your 14 year old asking for an espresso? Moderation is the operative word. Keep in mind all the sources of caffeine (sodas, tea, chocolate, etc.) In your kid’s diet and ensure he’s not getting more than what the experts say he should. Go for the smaller size, not the jumbo sizes. And remember…no coffee less than 6 hours before going to bed. Get your kids to be responsible coffee drinkers. They’ll end up being healthy and happy.

Quotes About Love And Family

No emotion is stronger than love. Some might be moved by anger, sadness, happiness, etc., but nothing can move a person more than love. It is the end-all when it comes to emotions and can be a driving force unprecedented by anything. But this feeling of love is elusive and isn’t always found very easily. When you think of love you might think of a soul mate; man or women. But soul mates are about as elusive as they come, and there are many people who go throughout life without ever finding theirs.

But not all of us believe in soul mates. I believe that there are certain people who are meant for someone, but on the other hand love isn’t something that is always constricted, limited, and set in stone. Love should be allowed to flourish anywhere and everywhere, even beyond the confines of a potential soul mate. Nevertheless when you find someone that you want to share you life with, it’s important to share more than that. You must give them a piece of not just your heart, but your soul. After all, they are a soul mate. “Giving someone a piece of your soul is better than giving a piece of your heart. Because souls are eternal” – Helen Boswell. This quote is perfect because soul mates truly deserve more than just the heart, they deserve the soul. This way the bond is strengthened even more so and you can begin the process of eternal, flawless love.

This kind of love isn’t just found in soul mates however. Some of us develop this strong of a connection with family members. Whether it be parents, siblings, or children, a real deep connection like the connection you produce with a soul mate can exist in your own family. But nothing worth while is ever easy to get to. Soul mates might be difficult to find, but easier to maintain; family is a different story. Family for the most part is easy to find, but very difficult to maintain. Loving your family is not always easy as it comes with its fair share of unhappy experiences, but its these experiences that act as reminders as to why you’re with these people. “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way” – Leo Tolstoy

Quotes For The Broken Heart

Eventually you will find yourself in pieces. Broken. Shattered like a glass knocked off a table. There are things that happen in everyone’s life that has this effect on us. Whether it’s losing a loved one, not getting something that you earned, or even being hated – everyone will experience life lashing out at them, and it’s not pretty. It’s important thought that we pick ourselves up, and put those pieces back together. The more times you do it, the stronger you become and before long you won’t find yourself slipping off the edge of the table again.

There is nothing heavier than a broken heart. Sometimes our hearts get broken, but the worst thing of all is when your heart is broken by a loved one. Losing a loved one or realizing that your love is only a one-way street is a traumatizing thing. But Mark Twain has a perfect quote for this: “Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option”. I love this quote because nothing in life should ever be a priority. If you find your heart broken by someone, you must quit feeling like things are priorities or meant to happen. Everything in life is an option, everything is a choice – you are never constricted to one path.

Like I said previously, sometimes we can have our hearts smashed by others. There are people out there in everyone’s lives that seek to do harm against your emotional state. They are parasites and feed off of it, but the best defense against this is to feed off of them. They want to see you broken, they want to see you fail; but you want to succeed. “Learn to use the criticism as fuel and you will never run out of energy” – Orrin Woodward. This is a perfect quote because this it is so true and logical. People want to break your heart, so use their ill will against them and develop a mindset that uses it as fuel. No matter what you do, never let others knock your glass off the table again.

Quotes For Your Brother

Life is a journey that is both individual and not. I like to think of life as being two-dimensional. We have the process that goes on in our heads: the decisions we make, our emotions, our thought-process, etc., but then we have the life that put out for the rest of the world: our family, our loved ones, our job, our hobbies, etc. Both are very important and must exist in the world together at the same time.

One of the biggest struggles on the individual side is dealing with being yourself. Your identity is whatever you want it to be to an extent. I wouldn’t say that are limited are constricted to being one person and person only; we can definitely change and adapt over time, but at the same time we do have to remain some way consistent – we need to stay true to ourselves. I think there are many different ways I can be myself and not be the same person. It’s difficult to wrap your head around, but you will know when you are not being yourself. “The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself” – Friedrich Nietzsche. This is a beautiful quote about the struggles of retaining your personal identification. You know who you are and nobody else, but sometimes that image can be construed.

When you do try to be someone who you are not, you might not be wary of it. You might think that the person whose skin you are in is yours, but the actions don’t match up. The most likely people to realize this discrepancy is your family. Take a sibling, like a brother, for example. They grew up with you, they either took care of you or you took care of them, so they know you inside and out. They have seen you at low times in your life, but also at high times. Either way they know your real identification, and they will realize the moment you are not being yourself. When you are feeling confused about who you are, go to them, go to your brother. After all, they are meant to help you. “Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero” – Marc Brown.

Sympathy Quotes

Life is brutal. Life is tough. Life is also amazing. Life is a lot of things all wrapped up into one prolonged experience that really sets on a rollercoaster ride of many different emotions. No one gets through unscathed and unrattled by atleast a few traumatizing experiences. Some of the most traumatic experiences come by way of death and loss. When someone close to us is taken, it entirely shakes us to our core and breaks us down. Some of us can’t rebuild the pieces and get back, and continue on as shells of our former past. However, a lot of are forced to pick up the pieces, and put them back together forming a stronger version of ourselves. While loss sucks and is truly a hard thing to go through, it strengthens and gives us a new perspective on life.

“We understand death only after it has placed its hands on someone we love” – Anne L. de Stael. This quote is very true because death makes its biggest impact on us when it is someone we love. When we invest our emotions, or time, or life into someone and their body moves on, it feels as if a part of us is lost as well. And maybe it is. “The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend” – Cali Rae Turner. This quote is perfect because it shows that family members, specifically sisters, are more than just family members – they are friends. In our sisters we don’t just have a beloved family member, but we also have a friend, so when our siblings are taken from us, it is as if two people are taken from us.

The most important thing about dealing with loss is grieving. Some of us grieve different ways, but nevertheless it is important to grieve. Those who prolong the grievance process are only delaying the inevitable, and if the sadness doesn’t find a way inside your body at first then it will just wait till later – there is no escaping it. This is why I always get my grievance out of the way first. I hit it head on, or rather I let it hit me head on. I survive, I get through it, and I carry on knowing that I am a stronger, more experienced man in this game of life.

College Kitchen Must-Haves

Going away to college can be a trying time. Packing up your entire life for the first time (of what will most likely prove to be many). Knowing what to pack is even more difficult. What do you need for your room and your kitchen and your bathroom? What do you mean dishes don’t do themselves?

What do you need to cook? (How do you cook?!?) There are many things you should probably have in order to feed yourself.

First and foremost – this may seem obvious – you need bowls. At least buy bowls. Bowls can be bowls and they can be plates. You can’t eat cereal or ramen on a plate. You’ll thank me later.

Second on the most-important list is utensils. Again, you’ll be a banshee without them and people will judge you. Just the basics will do. No need to get a whole set of twelve place settings. Buy individually! If you don’t want to constantly have to be doing dishes, buy at least two sets.

Now that we’re past the basics, and hopefully past ramen, what else will you need?

An often over-looked piece of kitchenware is the colander. If you make pasta or steam vegetables, how do you get the water out? A colander, that’s how. This is just one random thing that will help you loads in the kitchen.

Canopener. You’ll need one.

I forgot cups in the basics. If you would like to drink any beverages you should probably buy some cups.

Some appliances are probably a good idea. You don’t have to be fancy like a chef in your kitchen, but if you buy something you can use for many things, you’re off to a good start. Rice cookers are great options. They’re a good all-in-one tool for the kitchen that are also pretty affordable. Compare rice cookers and then impress your friends by making bread! Or just rice – maybe you should just stick with rice.

You should probably get some food staples, as well. Salt, pepper and spices to liven up bland dishes. Experiment with different pastas and grains.

What it comes down to is that you want to maximize efficiency while not having to spend that much money. By buying things that you can use for other things you spend maybe a little more money on one or two things, but end up with something that can do the job of ten. By buying a rice cooker you can cook rice, soup and bread. If you buy bowls instead of plates – if you have to choose – you can eat everything! It’s the little choices in life.

Student Vacations – Backpacking Europe On The Cheap

Sometimes as a student you will find a moment when you will just want to take a break. That is perfectly normal since your brain would probably be shouting out for you to relax as well. And what better way to relax than to have a nice long vacation in Europe?

Now, you are probably thinking that since you are just a student the budget for such an extravagant vacation is out of the question. All the travel expenses especially for accommodations in hotels would be impossible to cover with your part time job and allowance. But have you considered backpacking your way through all the destinations you want to go to?

Trying out this scenic route will allow you to stop to a place when you feel you want to stop. This eliminates the hassle and budget constraints of booking reservations. You will be surprise how many places you can lodge in for a night that offers enough comfort and security at very affordable prices. That is the sense of adventure you would most likely want to try out to take a break from the demands of your study.

Of course doing this means you would need to spend most of your time exploring your destination through hiking. It must be tiring to think about it but it is only so if you do not have the right hiking boots to help you out. You need to have one that can support your feet as you travel. Do not get this wrong, of course you will not be walking from one country to another.

But even so, your boots must durable enough to last throughout the experience of hiking and enjoying the view. It must also be comfortable enough for you to avoid having blister on your feet that will ruin your experience. You must then have the a top rating boots to help you out. To give you more of an idea which boots would fit you, you can visit this link http://www.mwengo.org/top-rated-best-hiking-boots-reviews-product-reviews/.

Hiking is just half way there though. You cannot hike properly if you keep on dragging a trolley that contains your entire luggage. And it will not be nicknamed backpacking through Europe if you are not using a suitable backpack to hold your things together. It must be big enough to carry all you need. The material and durability must also be considered.

Comfort must also be kept in mind. And once you have all these, then your backpack will even contribute to your enjoyment in your vacation. To help you choose the best backpacks for travel you need visit this link http://www.mwengo.org/best-travel-backpack-honest-review/.

Once you are set then you can plan out your adventure. Take a map of course since you would probably choose to avoid hiring any guide. Half of the thrill is actually in trying to know how you will get to the place you wanted to go. The other half is you taking the first step and welcoming the new experience of backpacking through Europe.
