Mr Dressup (1968-1996)

For more than 40 years, "Mr. Dressup" has been one of the most popular and beloved children's programs ever shown on Canadian television.  Teaching children about making friends, sharing and cooperating with others, and, most importantly, using their imagination, the show inspired millions of kids of all ages. Hosted by the gentle-voiced Ernie Coombs and his friends, treehouse residents Casey and Finnegan (performed by puppeteer Judith Lawrence), and later Chester the Crow, Annie, and Truffles, in the show's prime, it was watched by ninety percent of its target audience.

Ten years after Coombs' retirement in 1996, CBC continued airing the show to a new generation of preschoolers.  In receiving an honorary doctorate shortly before his death in 2001, he had a reminder for the students, and fans, at Trent University:  "Keep your crayons sharp, your sticky tape untangled, and always put the top back on your markers."
