Oscar Peterson was 36 years old when he made this classic live recording. Oscar was joined by his frequent collaborators, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. In the liner notes, Don Gold, Associate Editor of the trade publication, show business illustrated, aptly described the three musicians as "the finest trio in jazz".
The repertoire on the recording is vast, with an eleven minute and forty two second version of "Sometimes I’m Happy" which Oscar included as a tribute "to one of the geniuses of the jazz world, Lester Young".
In making The Trio a "Masterwork 2000" selection, the nomination and selection committees endorsed the view that this historic 1961 recording featuring three legendary musicians was the lightning rod that exemplified Oscar Peterson’s long and distinguished career to date.
