Le Disparu is a ground-breaking radio drama in which a "bourgeois" family – father, mother and son – discuss the ‘absence’ of Gérard: a suicide? the victim of an accident? or simply departed for places unknown? and debate the level of their responsibility for his fate. Marie-Claire Blais, an internationally renowned novelist, shifts the emphasis in Le Disparu from the exterior manifestations of Quebec society to the inner psychology of her protagonists as affected by the turmoil outside the home.
