AV PRESERVATION TRUST ANNOUNCES 10TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS ET Canada’s Rosey Edeh slated to host MasterWorks Gala on October 26
TORONTO, October 5, 2006… The Audio-Visual Preservation Trust (AV Preservation Trust) announced today its exciting lineup of 10th Anniversary events and programs coinciding with the MasterWorks ceremony on October 26th in Toronto in the presence of Governor General Michaëlle Jean. Hosted by the dynamic Rosey Edeh, Senior Entertainment Reporter for ET Canada, MasterWorks is the annual awards ceremony presented by the AV Preservation Trust to honour great works across the spectrum of Canadian entertainment.
“In celebrating the 10th anniversary of the AV Preservation Trust, we recognize that conserving our media heritage is important not only to our media industry but to each and every Canadian,” says AV President David Novek. In honour of the AV Preservation Trust’s 10th anniversary, a number of special events have been planned highlighting Canadian achievements in film, sound, radio and television, including:
• The National Film Board’s (NFB) Mediatheque Screenings of Canadian film gems on October 26th. These free public screenings include J.A. Martin Photographe (11:30 am), The Loon’s Necklace (1:30 pm), Le Declin de l’Empire Américain (3:30 pm), Begone Dull Care (6 pm) and The Street (8 pm).
• On October 30th, MPix, Astral Media’s classic movie channel, will broadcast a number of favourites from MasterWorks past: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Nobody Waved Goodbye, Le Chat Dans Le Sac, Mon Oncle Antoine, Begone Dull Care, Neighbours, and The Street.
• On October 26th, CBC will present four screenings of Canada’s beloved CBC miniseries, Anne of Green Gables at the Graham Spry Theatre in the CBC broadcasting Centre. The screenings are free and open to the public.
• The same day, Gala Records will release a two-disc MasterWorks sound recording CD showcasing an eclectic array of music from past MasterWorks honourees such as Mart Kenney and His Western Gentlemen, Gordon Lightfoot, Oscar Peterson and Moe Kauffman to name a few. This set is available at www.galarecords.ca.
The AV Trust is also pleased to announce this year’s lineup for its annual Symposium, “Developing New Audiences for AudioVisual Masterworks,” to be held on October 26th from 9 am to 4 pm at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. “We are fortunate to have experts from all recording categories participating in the MasterWorks symposium, making it a valuable event for industry members and the public alike,” says Stephen Ellis, President of MasterWorks.
The 2006 MasterWorks Symposium will highlight projects created by experts who mine archival treasures, re-inventing content to engage new audiences. Attendees will be treated to an informative choice of presentations from experts in television, sound, radio and film restoration and preservation.
Seminars and speakers:
Grant Bremner, of the British Broadcasting Corporation - “Unlocking the Archive”
Grant Bremner will discuss his role and responsibilities of managing the Creative Archive License Trial, a series of pilot services that allows the public to download and creatively use content from the BBC Archive. Grant Bremner is a veteran television producer and expert in the interactive media industry. His past achievements include helping launch the first multi-platform service in 1999 and as Executive Producer Interactive on the UK’s wildly successful show, PopIdol.
Richard Hess, Sound Consultant
Richard is considered one of the premiere experts in sound recording restoration. His 30-year career in audio and video systems design, including working for ABC-TV in New York, makes him an authority speaker on the topic of sound.
David Lemieux, former archivist for the Grateful Dead – “Preserving and Restoring Grateful Dead AudioVisual Material”
David Lemieux will speak about his work on archival projects with the Grateful Dead and other various record companies. He has produced scores of archival CD and DVD releases of the Grateful Dead’s audiovisual collections from 1999 to the present, and will share his extensive knowledge of archiving.
Alan Cross, of 102.1 The Edge and The Ongoing History of Music – “The Infinite Music Archive” National radio personality and rock historian, Alan Cross, will share his experiences as veteran radio host of 102.1 The Edge, author of The Alternative Music Almanac and host of the popular one-hour music documentary radio show, The Ongoing History of New Music.
Dennis Doros, of Milestone Film & Video – “The Whole Wired World”
Dennis Doros and Amy Heller, creators of Milestone Film & Video, have won countless awards for the restoration and revival of many significant films of our time, including two silent films staring Gloria Swanson. Dennis Doros has supervised and produced more than 100 video releases as well as over 50 silent film scores, and has long occupied the position as one of the most influential independent distributors in the industry.
Max Valiquette, president of Youthography – Keynote Speaker “Culture in Transition”
Max Valiquette, president of Canada’s leading youth marketing consulting agency, Youthography, is today’s leading authority on pop culture in Canada and one of the most sought after speakers on the topic of youth marketing. He also hosts TVOntario’s youth talk show VoxTalk and is the Chairperson of Strategy Magazine’s Understanding Youth Conference.
